Abstract

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the serum levels of minerals and trace elements in the infants and young children.

Methods : Sixty healthy infants and children aged 8-28 months were selected in Seoul area. Serum concentrations of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper were measured by ICP-spectrophotometer. Serum concentrations of minerals and trace elements compared according to early feeding pattern.

Results : Between 8 to 12 months, the mean serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc and copper were 10.3¡¾18.1mg/d9, 8.0¡¾6.2mg/U, 3.0¡¾0.8mg/U, 80.2¡¾ 23.6pg/di, 127.5¡¾18.9ug/dk, and 109.3¡¾18.1,ag/U respectively.
Serum concentrations of minerals and trace elements aged 13 to 28 months averaged as follows, calcium 9.6¡¾1.2mg/dk, phosphorus 6.7¡¾2.6mg/dk, magnesium 3.2¡¾1.2mg/dt?, iron 89.4¡¾39.5,ig/dP,, zinc 137.3¡¾21.4,ug/d.P. and copper 114.3¡¾22.5gg/d.l!.

There was no significant difference in serum minerals and trace elements according to the early feeding pattern except that serum iron level of breast-feeding group was significantly lower than formula and mixed feeding group.

Conclusions : The results of this study showed that the nutritional status of minerals and trace elements of the subjects was relatively favorable.
